Why not BitTorrent main line?

This is certainly not a pejorative question. I’m looking for the history before I explore something. I just want to understand the history of choosing a new Dht over just integrating with BitTorrent mainline.

Was the data storage part not quite there yet at inception?

The bittorrent mainline DHT is a UDP/IP DHT. Libp2p is designed to work over arbitrary transports (currently QUIC, TCP, Websockets, bluetooth, etc.).

That said, it would be interesting to try to adapt a BitTorrent DHT to work over libp2p.

Ah yes and that’s obvious in retrospect. And this should probably have been asked over in IPFS land. It just seems like the BitTorrent dht is much more stable. I know there is work being done though.
